Mac O’Brien’s NORTH / SOUTH project captures an artist in evolution. Being written and recorded across Nashville, Chicago and Los Angeles, the project is being shaped alongside an accomplished circle of songwriters and producers with credits across country music, television and film.

Collaborators include Troy Johnson of The Nashvillians, whose songwriting credits include cuts by Keith Urban, Montgomery Gentry, The Chicks and Trace Adkins; Scott Lindsey, whose work includes cuts by the Bellamy Brothers and Kevin Costner, along with song placements in Yellowstone and Tulsa King; and producer/songwriter Brett Boyett, whose career includes more than 300 television and film song placements and production work with artists including Lauren Alaina, Travis Tritt and Trisha Yearwood.

But NORTH / SOUTH isn’t about fitting country and rock onto the same record. The SOUTH introduced the grit and swagger of songs like “Cold Blooded” and “Heavy Chains.” As the project continues to unfold, the NORTH is widening Mac’s sonic range—from the darker, heavier edge of “Alien” and “Misery” to the more melodic, pop-leaning energy of “Wannabe.” Rather than chasing a genre, NORTH / SOUTH is revealing a sound built around Mac’s voice, songwriting and point of view.

That evolution is already finding an audience. “Alien” and “Misery” both earned Apple Music editorial recognition in rock—an early signal that Mac’s evolving sound is connecting beyond the genre lines where the project began.
